Israeli General Shimon Erem (retired)Israeli General Shimon Erem (retired)

President, Israel Christian Nexus

Shimon Erem, founder and president of the Israel Christian Nexus, has lived his life on the frontline of Israel’s history. Born in Lithuania in 1922 and raised in the Land of Israel from the time he was three years old, he joined the Jewish Brigade of the British Army to fight in World War II, serving in both Italy and France.

Stationed in Northern Italy with a peacekeeping force at the end of the war, the young officer learned about the horrors of the Nazi death camps – even traveling to Austria and Germany to see the camps for himself. Determined to see justice done for the victims of the atrocities, he spent the next several years leading a group of clandestine Nazi hunters.

A key figure in Israel’s War of Independence, Erem served on the “Mercaz Lagola,” the team that organized and commanded all Jewish underground operations in Europe, including the smuggling of Jews into their hoped-for homeland and arms acquisition.

In 1948, he was named by David Ben-Gurion to be on a select group to organize the first official Officers School of the Israeli Defense Forces. One of Israel’s most decorated military heroes, General Erem has played a major role in virtually every war in the nation’s history, including the Sinai Campaign, the 1967 Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

From 1960 – 1966, Shimon Erem made his home in Western Africa, spending time in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia. There, he served as an advisor to government and business officials on economic, political and military development issues, working closely and becoming close personal friends with, among others, Nigerian hero and President Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

In 1970, General Erem moved to the United States with his wife Danielle. He has remained active in organizations and causes that promote the welfare of Israel and has dedicated himself to building bridges between the Jewish State and the Jewish and Christian communities, as well as with government officials, here in the U.S. and around the world.

He is past-chairman of The Council of Israeli Organizations serves or has served on the executive boards of directors of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Anti-Defamation League (A.D.L.) Pacific Region, Zionist Organization of America, and Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA). He is the past president of B’nai B’rith/District Four (Western U.S. and Canada), and former chairman of the B’nai B’rith Political Action Network. He also is the former chairman of Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces and is the founder and president of the Promoting Israel Education Fund and the Israel-Christian Nexus.

Shimon Erem is a graduate of Hebrew University, where he was Student Body President (1946 – 1948), and Columbia University, where he earned a degree in Economics. He also holds a degree from the College of Political Science in Jerusalem (forerunner of the National Security College), where he also has lectured.
